My Favorite Things

Home

I'm not one for raindrops on roses.

I don't like cats, so I could easily forego whiskers on kittens.

I don’t cook, so you can keep your bright copper kettles.

And I hate the cold, so you can stick your warm woolen mittens……well, you know…..

But on my list of favorite things? A point to point, destination long ride. There’s nothing better.

Sure, I’m generally a fan of a long ride of any kind, but the sort where you start out from home, ride 3, 4, 5, or 6 hours, only to end up right back where you started? Well, somehow…it just seems less productive than when you leave home with a goal of ending up somewhere totally different and all under your own power.

Perhaps that is what inspired me to take that fateful bike trip across the country in 1995; the one that taught me how to ride a bike. The one that taught me that even as a bicycle “tourist”, I had to race. The one that unfortunately didn’t teach me how to change a flat (FACTOID1: I rode entirely across the country and didn’t get one flat tire. FACTOID2: Racing a half Ironman some 6 years later, when I did, in fact, encounter my first flat tire, knowing how to change said flat would have been helpful knowledge).

So from the start of my life as a cyclist of sorts, I’ve been a fan of the destination ride.

So this past Saturday, I decided to go to the Cape “the hard way”. DaveyG hopped in the car with Riley the Wonderdog, who snoozed her way down.

And I set out to ride.

It’s a familiar ride for me; one I do as often as I get the chance. Though the course has morphed over the years….I now avoid 3A as much as possible…too much traffic. I now avoid the 138 (again, too much traffic, and people in Brockton don’t seem to like cyclists….or they like their Dunkin Donuts more and are too inclined to cut you off to get at that Boston Crème just a little faster……).

I love just about every part of this ride. I love leaving the city early when there’s not a lot of traffic. I love having roads to myself that, at almost any other time of day, are impassable by bike. I love the Turtle Pond Parkway because it has a funny name. I love Canton because I have friends I don’t often see who live there and I always wonder what they are up to as I pass thru their town. I love Bay Street. It’s rolling, tree lined and quiet. I love the 106 because when I get to the end of it, I get to stop for my first Red Bull of the day. I love Long Pond Road because you can start to smell the sea air. I love the bridge because it means I’ve arrived.

I love Service Road because it keeps me off of 6A. And I love 6A for the seaside views that typify Cape Cod.

And when I arrive, I love knowing that I am in one of my most favorite places in the world. A place where I have spent every summer of my life…even the summers I was too young to remember.

That is a list of my favorite things!

Persistence. Determination. Love. The Journey!
