Lessons From Australia So Far

Home

1) Australia is a LONG way from home.  2) The first time you run in the Noosa National Park, it’s best to be armed with breadcrumbs. Preferably a map…but breadcrumbs will do, lest your 6 mile run become a 90 minute adventure.

1) Australia is a LONG way from home.

2) The first time you run in the Noosa National Park, it’s best to be armed with breadcrumbs. Preferably a map…but breadcrumbs will do, lest your 6 mile run become a 90 minute adventure.

3) The second time you run in the Noosa National Park, having had the chance to study the trail map a bit more carefully, it will be one of the most joyful runs of your life.

4) If you ask for iced coffee in Australia, they will bring you a cup of vanilla ice cream and an espresso shot…..for $4.50. Not a bad surprise if that’s what you want, but if you have a 6 mile run still to do (which may or may not take you 90-minutes), having a pound of ice cream in your belly is not the greatest idea.

5) If you generally prefer a café Americano, then you are best to order a Long Black in Australia.

6) Driving on the “wrong side of the road” is more difficult at night when there are fewer cars, which seems ironic, but it's true.

7) Ginger beer might be the greatest invention ever.

8.) They have birds here that sound like monkeys.

9) The 2 foot long lizards you see in the Noosa National Park are scary looking enough to make you poo your pants, but so far, appear to be totally benign.

10) The wild turkeys, or chickens or whatever they are that live in the same Park, while seemingly benign, are really little terrorists with feathers.

11) The costal views here are stunning.

12) Swimming with a towel wrapped around one’s ankles is a recipe for disaster….or at minimum, very sore shoulders. But the swim squad here is awesome and there is no shortage of kick ass athletes to train with!

13) If you ask, at a gas station, to use the rest room, they won’t know what you are talking about. It feels crass, if you are an American, to refer to it as such, but it’s a toilet and they don’t know it by any other name.

14) The internet here was invented by Fred Flintstone which makes communication with “back home” challenging. But it also gives me great cause to relax between sessions instead of farfing around on Twitter and Facebook.

15) This is one of the most stunningly awesome places to train in the world and I’ve only just begun!

Persistence. Determination. Love. The Journey!
