The following was released yesterday. I am really pleased to be on board with Kestrel for 2009 and the years to come! They are a top notch group of people who are making some really incredible bicycles!

NEWS RELEASE

DEDE GRIESBAUER TO JOIN KESTREL ATHLETES

PHILADELPHIA (Dec. 22, 2008) - Kestrel Bicycles is pleased to announce its sponsorship of professional triathlete, Dede Griesbauer. Griesbauer enters her 5th year as a professional triathlete.

Placing 10th at the Ironman ™ World Championships in October, her second top-ten placement in as many years, Griesbauer has already earned her spot at the race for 2009. Winning Ironman™ UK in 2006 and placing as runner-up at Ironman™ Brazil in 2007 also add to her list of esteemed accomplishments.

"I'm really pleased to be affiliated with Kestrel," said Dede Greisbauer. "I had a chance to test the bike [Airfoil Pro SE] and it made the choice an easy one - I love it."

"Dede really got our attention at Kona this year, especially with her strong bike leg," said Steven Harad, Kestrel Brand Manager. Adding to our dynamic list of professional athletes, we are looking forward to big things in 2009.

Griesbauer will start her 2009 season with Kestrel on her Airfoil Pro SE at the California Half Ironman on April 4. She joins Kestrel athletes Pip Taylor, Katja Schumacher, Charlotte Paul, and Matt Wisthoff.

About Dede Griesbauer:
Dede Trimble Griesbauer is a former collegiate and National Team swimmer. She was an All-American swimmer at Stanford University and represented the USA Swimming National Team between 1989 and 1994.
By ADAM SMARTSCHAN
STAFF WRITER
January 20, 2008

Linda Trimble sounded like she was about half kidding when she described her daughter, Dede Griesbauer, as "incredible, but kind of crazy."

Frankly, it's tough to argue.

A professional triathlete and part-time Chatham resident, Griesbauer is just plain ... something.
Call it driven.

Call it anything.

Just don't call it typical.

She's genial and mild-mannered ("below the radar," she said). She may or may not be nuts, at least in a sporting sense. And Dede Griesbauer is not like you.

Reason No. 1 you are not like Dede Griesbauer: The longer, the easier.

Ironman triathlons consist of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike leg and a full 26.2-mile marathon. One after the other, no breaks.
Olympic-distance triathlons consist of a 0.93-mile swim, a 24.85-mile bike leg and a 6.2-mile run.
Griesbauer, who splits time between Chatham and Boston, prefers the Ironman distance, which usually takes her between nine and 10 hours to finish. She's completed 10 of the 140-mile events since 2002, including six since she turned pro in 2005.
"When I race an Olympic-distance race, it hurts more than the Ironman," she said. "Physiologically, I was built for this sport. The longer the distance gets, the better I get."

2. She said no to Harvard, Princeton and Northwestern.

A backstroke phenom at Choate Rosemary Hall in the late 1980s, Griesbauer was hotly recruited by swimming powers North Carolina and Virginia. Her father, John Trimble, who splits time between Chatham and South Carolina, said Princeton and Harvard were "dying for her." Northwestern and Vanderbilt admitted her without so much as an application.

She wanted to go to Stanford, which didn't offer a scholarship.

Once her parents allayed her concerns about the cost of school, she headed west. In four years, she swam for two national championship Cardinal teams, earned 10 All-America honors, won Pan-Pacific and Pan-American Games 200-meter backstroke titles and twice raced in the U.S. Olympic trials.

3. "It didn't take much convincing."

Griesbauer raced her first Ironman "on a whim" in 2002. An amateur triathlete who spent her days making solid cash as a Wall Street equity trader, she was the first non-pro woman to finish.

After two trips to the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, her coach, two-time world champ Karen Smyers of Lincoln, broached the idea of Griesbauer quitting her job and turning pro.

"I knew she was good enough to make it as a pro," Smyers said. "I knew from getting to know her she has the competitive spirit of an athlete. I thought she would get a lot of pleasure out of pursuing it."

Said Griesbauer, "It didn't take much convincing."

"I had reservations," said Griesbauer, who grew up in New Jersey and spent time on the Cape as a kid. "I had a career, an MBA and a nice paycheck. But my husband said 'If you don't quit your job, I'll quit it for you.' "

That was three years ago. In 2007, she raced eight triathlons of various distances (two Ironman), and never finished out of the top 10 pro women. At 37 (middle-aged for a triathlete), she was the first American woman to complete the World Championship in October.

4. She knows, to the second, how long her parents sat "mouth agape" when she told them her plan to turn pro.

Fifty-three seconds. At least that's what her Web site, dede-griesbauer.com, says.

5. She wishes she were a better runner.

Griesbauer has finished 17 marathons. Her best time over 26.2 miles was a 3:07.07 in the 2004 Mardi Gras Marathon in New Orleans — an average mile of just over seven minutes.

"I love to run," she said. "I wish I were better at it."

6. You call it internal organs shutting down. She calls it a bad day.

On June 25, 2006, Griesbauer landed in the hospital, suffering from the early stages of renal failure after collapsing unconscious during the Ironman Coeur D'Alene in Idaho.

It was 105 degrees. Acute dehydration had stopped her kidneys from working properly. She called it "not a lot of fun."

Weeks later, on Aug. 20, 2006, Griesbauer set a course record in winning the Ironman United Kingdom in Sherborne, England.

"I've always known that as an athlete, it's universally true: You learn more from the bad days than you do the good days," she said.

7. Her bikes cost more than her parents' first car.

At $5,000-plus apiece, they cost more than hers, too.

8. She's great at staring at black lines on the bottom of a pool.

Nine-hour Ironman races, Griesbauer said, go by "faster than you'd think."

"You're focusing on your race strategy constantly," she said. "You're thinking about your nutrition. What's starting to hurt? Is that a cramp coming on? How do I troubleshoot that?

"There's a lot of focus, but you do daydream a little bit. Having been a swimmer for so long, and having spent so many hours staring at a black line, I'm good at disassociating myself from the present; checking out mentally while still staying focused on the task at hand."

9. She can't stop.

Griesbauer's 9-to-5 is training.

A routine offseason day consists of three or more training sessions, lasting from her 7 a.m. wakeup call to the early evening.

It's been a long time since a 100-mile bike ride was special to Griesbauer. Runs are measured in hours. Some of the swimming workouts would make a dolphin blush.

And that's in the winter, when she's not racing.

"I'm not as good about taking an offseason as I should be," she said.

Said Smyers: "My role is to keep her from doing too much most of the time."

Her father said he's especially impressed by one of her usual bike training routes: Chatham to the canal and back, no problem.

10. She doesn't want to stop.

Griesbauer isn't sure exactly how long she'll keep racing full-time.

The money — from prizes and sponsorships — isn't bad, but it's "a drop in the bucket" compared to what she gave up when she left the financial world. Out are the fancy vacations and expensive meals. In is a yearly wine-and-dinner sitdown with husband Dave to decide if it's still worth it.

For now, at least, it is.

The time away from home, the torturous miles — right now, it's all Griesbauer wants to do.

"The training, it stinks," she said. "There's definitely days when I get up and I don't want to freaking do it today. I just don't.

"But at the end of the day, I love what I do. I feel very lucky to do it."
